Superintendent's Article - August 10, 2006

Wow! The first day for students will be Wednesday, August 23, 2006, except for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who do not start until Thursday, August 24. The high school made application to the State Department of Education for a waiver day, which excuses students in grades 10 thru 12 from the first day of classes so that the staff can provide an orientation day for the 9th grade students. We are trying this as a pilot in hopes that it will provide a better transition to the high school.  read more »

The Louisville City Schools' Board of Education voted unanimously to place a 9.85 mill operating levy on the November 7th ballot. This is the first Operating Levy to be placed on the ballot since the levy that was passed in November of 1992. The Board, Treasurer, and Superintendent have been carefully monitoring the finances as they relate to services provided. In order for the Louisville City Schools to maintain current programs and services, these new operating dollars are needed.  read more »

Congratulations to our staff at the bus garage for another 100% passage of our buses at the day-long inspection held on June 13th. Transportation Director Jack Friesner, as well as mechanics Bill Roosa and Tony Shaheen, did a great job getting the buses ready. All of our buses are now stickered and ready to go for the new school year. Bus drivers Julie McCauley and Dave Eichelberger were also present to drive the buses in and out of the inspection point. By the way, our Transportation Department is in need of substitute drivers for the new school year. If you are interested in becoming a substitute driver, please contact my office for an application. You must have a CDL with a bus endorsement in order to drive a school bus.   read more »

It’s summer, and we are on vacation. Right! Not really…the central administrative offices at 418 East Main Street are open all summer.  Our hours remain the same--8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It really is amazing how much there is to do as we prepare for the new school year. There are lots of deliveries, lots of telephone calls and emails, and many adjustments that are made in order to be ready for the new school year.   read more »

It has been another great week of events in our schools as we conclude the formal school year. Our commencement exercises on May 19th were a wonderful recognition of 230 graduating seniors. The high school also presented a diploma to Korean War Veteran Ray Monnot, who could not graduate in 1953 because of his service to our country. It was quite a moment when he came forward to receive his diploma as everyone in the gym gave him a standing ovation. Congratulations to all the members of the Class of 2006. Best Wishes to each of you. Thanks to Mrs. Polly Doyle, the high school administration, and the high school staff for all of the organization and support for these commencement exercises and for the seniors. It was a super night.  read more »

It has been another busy week – graduation, concerts, festivals, year-end commitments, and of course the last week of school for seniors. I want to congratulate the members of the Class of 2006 for their many years of contributions to our schools and our community. From service projects to performances to academic successes (Science Fair, Destination Imagination, Academic Challenge, Testing Results) to the arts (what a great art show, band concert and choir concert) and to the athletics (NBC championships in football, boys’ and girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball, and girls’ basketball), it has been a fantastic year led by many in our senior class. Thank you Class of 2006, and best wishes for many future successes!  read more »

We have completed another very busy week for Louisville Schools. The high school band concert was held on May 4th at the middle school auditorium. It was a super performance that was highlighted by a saxophone solo performed by senior Brandon Morris to the music of Serenade and Rondo. The program concluded by a wonderful play of John Philip Sousa’s “King Cotton”. A special thanks to directors Karen Long, Kris Bleininger, and Scott Sommer.  read more »

May is a wonderful month for the students in our schools. It is not only a time of closure for them, but it is a time when the community and particularly the parents can see so many performances that cap a year of growth for our students. This May is no exception. I have attended so many events recently that have made me extremely proud of our students and staff. It is a great time to be a Leopard.  read more »
