Levy Update
The LEPS Levy Committee meets every Thursday at 6:00 pm at the new Middle School in the library for committee work. People who wish to help with the levy efforts are invited to attend. Then at 7:00pm the community is invited to attend a question and answer session with school officials and the levy committee. A short power point and informational brochures will be available that give the voter the basic information about Issue #7.
Issue #7 is an incremental operating tax levy that will gradually increase over a 4 year period. The first year increase will be 5.9 mils and two years later will increase 1.9mils with a fourth year increase of 1.9mils. This levy is a response to the survey that stated the November levy of 9.85 mils was too much at one time. The incremental levy is basically a phase in over a 4 year period.
Due to the district's reduction efforts, nearly one million dollars have been trimmed from the budget over the last two years. The Superintendent has been directed by the Board of Education to reduce another 1.1 million dollars out of next year's budget. This will come in the form of textbook reductions, administrative staff reductions, instructional staff reductions, support staff reductions as well as revenue from pay to participate with student activities and increases in student and adult lunch prices. Without additional revenue from the levy, additional cuts will be necessary in order to balance the budget and keep us out of state fiscal watch.
